18 May 2007 - May Newsletter

Dear Parents

As we have further important dates and information for this term we take this opportunity to update you with our news.

CONGRATULATIONS
To our cross country runners who competed successfully in a cross country/athletics event at Spring Hall last night. Among our successful athletes were Emma Sutcliffe (Y5) 1st in the 600m run, Joe Nolan (Y5) 1st in the run and javelin, Sophie Karandikar (Y4) 1st in the 600 metres run and Roisin McCallion (Y6) 1st in the Javelin.

Well done to these winners and everyone else who competed and represented our school so well.
LETTER FROM BISHOP ARTHUR ABOUT CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
We enclose Bishop Arthur's letter to everyone in the Catholic Parishes and schools regarding the issues that are facing our Catholic Secondary Schools in Calderdale, Kirklees and elsewhere in the country.
We continue to encourage families to be watchful and to challenge where there are threats to our right to provide quality Catholic secondary education. As Bishop Arthur indicates, asking questions and indicating our wishes at times of local and national elections do make politicians take extra notice.
We are very pleased that our Bishop is, with the backing of Archbishop Nichols and the national Catholic Education Service, making clear the Diocese's intention to support a strong Catholic secondary school in Calderdale and we ask you to keep all our schools, pupils and staff in your thoughts and prayers.

SUMMER TERM ACTIVITIESWe have many sporting, Arts and spiritual opportunities this term as well as the usual end of year tests, assessments and reports for parents.Mr. O'Connor and Mrs. Hayes' class, for example are involved in a history project with Age Concern in which they will help record the leisure and sports activities of Calderdale people between 1920 - 1980. As Year 5 pupils they will also spend a day at Mixenden Outdoor Centre (last year described by one pupil as 'the best trip ever') and will have a day at St. Catherine's as part of our awareness raising for high school. All classes have similarly varied programmes for this term.

PTA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGWEDNESDAY 9TH MAY 2007 - 7.00 P.M. IN SCHOOL
Please join us at this important meeting if you can. This term we have our main fundraising activities, the Halifax Charity Gala and our Summer Fayre (see Diary) as well as other activities and treats for our children. We remind you that the Infant Playground is our main project for this year. At present we now know that we will need to raise £6,000 towards our basic Playground works with additional monies needed for equipment and resources.

FINALLY

Please remember our First Communion children and their families over the next two weekends.

Thank you once again for your ongoing support and suggestions to help further improve St. Mary's. We look forward to an enjoyable and full term and to meeting you at our many events.

With all best wishes
